Does Zimbabwe Have a Chance Against Egypt?

It may sound like a silly thing to talk about but at the same time I find it exciting to size up the underdogs before a major tournament.

When looking at Zimbabwe’s roster, the first thing worth pointing out is that there are no domestic-based players on the 23-man squad.

And of course, it is a good thing that there are no players on the roster playing in the top-flight of Zimbabwe because I can’t imagine any of those players causing trouble for Mohamad Salah.

Fourteen of the Zimbabwean footballers currently plie their trade in South Africa and there is also a defender named Alec Mudimu, who plays semi-professionally in Wales.

There is no need for me to mention the name of the club, so I will just move on.

The three players worth mentioning are Knowledge Musona, Marvelous Nakamba, and Tendayi Darikwa.

Yes, two of the players have awesome names. But Tendayi Darikwa was born in England to Zimbabwean parents and currently plays for Nottingham Forest.

Musona and Nakamba both play in the top football league in Belgium as the former plays for Anderlecht and the latter plays for Club Brugge.

It will be very difficult for Zimbabwe to come away with a positive result against hosts Egypt in the opening match of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

But it is safe to say that the trio of players that I mentioned will have to play the game of their lives.

Darikwa has what it takes to play shut-down defense while Musona and Nakamba must be ready to make big plays on the counterattacks.

Going into the match opening match, head coach Sunday Chidzambwa and his coaching staff will need plenty of knowledge about Egypt.

But in order to win, Zimbabwe will have to be more than marvelous on the pitch.

Prediction: Egypt 4-1 Zimbabwe
