It has been a while since I have written about the Faroe Islands and it can’t be surprising because what were the Faroese supporters expecting against Spain?
The match between the Faroe Islands and Spain was played in Torshavn on 7 June with the Spaniards coming away with a 4-1 victory.
When looking back at the match, it obviously wasn’t a bad result for the Faroes.
The match didn’t get off to the best start with Spain scoring two goals in the first nineteen minutes through Sergio Ramos and Jesus Navas.
But a goal from Klaemint Olsen in the 30th minute gave the Faroese supporters something to cheer about and it was a great moment.
I am not surprised that the goal came from a corner kick because the outmatched teams must take advantage of set-piece opportunities.
Center-back Odmar Faero had the perfect flick header and striker Klaemint Olsen was in the right place at the right time to finish it off to get the Faroes on the board.
I was surprised to see that Gunnar Nielsen wasn’t in goal. But I think it was more surprising that Nielsen wasn’t even on the 23-man roster.
Perhaps Lars Olsen decided to honor the requests of many Faroese football fans. But ironically, new starting keeper Teitur Gestsson was credited with an own goal when Spain increased the lead to 3-1.
I am not trying to toot my own horn, but it was nice to see Klaemint Olsen starting up top as the lone striker.
For the past few months it was my suggestion to see Olsen starting and having Jakup Thomsen coming on as the super sub.
Maybe Lars Olsen has read my blogs. Actually, probably not. But it is good to think positive!
Next up for the Faroe Islands is a home match against Norway on 10 June in Torshavn.
In my opinion, this match is the moment of truth for the Faroe Islands because they were able to display a respectable performance against powerhouse Spain.
Norway is a solid team, but the Faroe Islands must come away with a positive result in order to avoid finishing bottom of the group.
It can be done, but game script will be a huge factor and the Faroes must stay patient and execute on set pieces.
Prediction: Faroe Islands 1-1 Norway
