The stock of manager Vital Borkelmans has got to be rising after his men defeated Syria 2-0 to clinch a spot in the 2019 Asian Cup knockout phase.
Jordan started the tournament with a shock 1-0 win over defending champions Australia and disappoint in the next match.
Football experts and pundits were favoring Syria to defeat Jordan and it is not surprising because of Syria’s fantastic run in World Cup qualifying.
But with the way Borkelmans’ men are playing, it is safe to say that Jordan is a squad that must not be taken lightly from here on out.
Borkelmans began as a manager with Belgian club Dender EH but he gained valuable experience working with the national team of Belgium as an assistant coach to Marc Wilmots from 2012 to 2016.
Next up for Jordan is a match against Palestine in Abu Dhabi on 15 January.
When previewing this match, it is hard for me to say which team is favored because Jordan has already won the group due to Australia defeating Palestine 3-0.
In simple English, Jordan has nothing to play for and can elect to rest its starters in preparation for the second round.
This is obviously music to the ears of Palestine because while the other group match between Australia and Syria is being played simultaneously, Palestine can focus on winning against a possible Jordanian reserve side.
Australia can advance with a draw, but I don’t expect the Socceroos to come out and play it safe. After starting the tournament with a loss, the Aussies are determined to right the ship as the defending Asian Cup champions.
Getting back to the main topic at hand involving Jordan and Palestine. I think Palestine has a good chance to win this match and earn a spot in the second round.
Prediction: Palestine 2-1 Jordan
